The MYTH of God Blessing America

January 7th, 2009

Well, it’s that time of the year, get ready to hear a bunch of hack politicians in Congress and the White House utter completely nonsensical phrases like:

  • “May God Bless this great country”
  • “May God continue to bless this great country”
  • “God Bless America”
  • “May God bless all of us”
  • Fill in the blank that politicians lie about God blessing.

Alright, got your attention?  I know, I know, how dare I speak for the Almighty (and I do mean Almighty with all reverence).  I’m an evangelical Christian but think that what I’m about to write pretty much sums it up for just about all traditional faiths.  Ready?

God stopped blessing us many many years ago.  Perhaps He’s restraining His judgement upon us or we’re benefiting from His mercy, but c’mon, do we really think He’s blessing us?  Why such certainty behind the statement you ask?

  1. Since 1973 we’ve just about killed 43 MILLION babies in the womb.  Yep, God sure is for that.
  2. We’re now 11 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt with much more coming.  God just loves irresponsibility and presumption of the future.
  3. Personal responsibility, shame and embarrassment have just about been removed from our vocabulary and replaced with a dysfunctional family experience, ADD, ADHD, QUXT (that’s mine, I like acronyms) or any other psychological malady that has been provided as a reason for irresponsible behavior.  In the end, it’s really no ones fault except Christians or conservatives; they can still be blamed for all of America’s ills.  Yep, the teddy bear God in heaven really doesn’t have an opinion about right and wrong and will excuse all our behavior if we can show Him a prescription for medication we’re taking to help us deal with our dysfunctional family experience.
  4. Sexual promiscuity before the age of 18 is rampant.  According to a HHS report, more than two thirds of males have had sexual intercourse before 18 (see here).  Slightly more than half of females aged 18 have had intercourse.  Yep, God sure is for that.
  5. The list can go on and on and if you’d like to add some, jot me an email and I’ll put them up.

So, when you hear a President (from either party) or congressperson “X” say; “and may God continue to bless this country”, take it for what its worth, just a gimmick used by career politicians to trick you into thinking they’re on your side, they’re like you.  Let me assure, these statements can’t pass the simplest of common sense tests…not the simplest.

Don’t forget rampant homosexuality being shoved down our throats!
Coming to the military, our schools and even our churches. Yeah, God
    sure approves of that!

How about 2Chronicles 7:14 If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

So many Christians now days hate America and I know they claim they don’t but there constant rants say other wise — if these same people were born in the Middle East they would be Muslims today — If they were born in China they would probably be Buddhists, and so on. Perhaps people ought to be thankful for living in a country that afforded them the Gospel of Jesus Christ and stop being unthankful.

    @Brian
Hello Brian. Thanks for the comment. As the author of this post, I really wasn’t trying to say that God hasn’t blessed us; indeed He has (past tense). Rather, my angst is with politicians deceptively suggesting that God is (present tense) blessing us when on face value, it seems pretty clear He’s not. However, lets, for sake of discussion say He is, well then, we’ve got a little bit of a dilemma. Why? Because if we have a God who blesses in spite of behavior that is pretty much against everything He desires for His creation, then don’t we really have a rather impotent God? A God who really doesn’t care too much about behavior such as abortion, rampant promiscuity, irresponsible debt, homosexuality and whatever else you want to list as abhorrent to Him?

Now, to be sure, we may want a God who doesn’t care too much about these issues, but certainly the God of the Bible has much to say about these. So, my point is not a theological one, rather it is a cultural one. Namely, politicians really just play with these phrases and thus, perhaps it would behoove the average American to ponder a little more deeply before they swoon at someone who states “and may God continue to bless this nation.”

    Thanks for commenting

Brian, I can appreciate what you have said, but I have to ask you……is that really the Gospel of the Bible being preached here now? Which includes repentance, our death (to self), burial and being raised with Christ in newness of life?
    Blessings

I’d like to believe that no one is born a specific religion… and even if theyre born into a family with a specific religion, God has and always will make his “true” way known to “His” people. So… praise God that this country’s primary supposed religion is Christianity… but if this country were truly blessed by God, we lost it once we allowed “freedom of religion”… We denied him, and now he denies us!! God bless HIS CHURCH… wherever they may be!!

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points.
